In the center of Shanghai, there is one kind of people. They live in the most flourishing place of this city. However, their living condition is very bad comparing with the environment around their houses. These people are the residents who still live in the tradition lanes in downtown Shanghai. These years, Shanghai government has made many effort in developing the business function, office function and service function of the downtown. However, during the process, the government ignored the living function in this area. The lack of the living facilities around the downtown made the residents living in the tradition lanes feel harder to exist. And it also made the tradition lanes become an isolated island in downtown Shanghai. On the other hand, because of the bad living situation, a part of people who resided in tradition lanes before chose to leave this place to improve their living level. It caused the residents who still live in the tradition lanes have the sense of loss. With the disappearance of the affection between family members and neighbors, these residents have been isolated in sprit. In other words, it made the tradition lanes also become an isolated island in sprit. In this paper, the author chooses two tradition lanes in Shanghai as studies, uses many research methods and theories of Sociology to show the daily life and psychological condition of these residents. And then the author tries to analyze and reveals the reason why the tradition lanes in downtown Shanghai became an isolated island for living.This paper is composed of five different parts. The first part is introduction. In this part, the author reviews the researches on space theory and urban development, and uses these theories to analyze the phenomena and problems in the following parts. In the second part, the author focuses on the external cause which led the tradition lanes to become an isolated island in living, and reveals that the lack of facilities is the main reason of this problem. In the third part, the author focuses on the internal cause which made the tradition lanes become an isolated island, and shows that the change of residents in these tradition lanes is the main reason. In the fourth part, the author describes how the residents faced, adapted and developed their living condition. The fifth part is a conclusion. It reveals that the tradition lanes in downtown Shanghai have been selectively marginalized by rights and capital. In this part, the author also concludes the residents’living condition and adaptation of environment. In the end, the author makes blessings for these residents.
