The author has been haunted by a few questions as she lives in a bilingualfamily and bears an experience of learning a foreign language at ten years old. Forinstance, why can’t an adult acquire a second language as a child grasps mothertongue? Why do children learn more quickly than adults in second languageacquisition? As for children, is the second language acquisition(also as SLA) theearlier the better? The author made her son (six-year-old, named Youyou) who has an experienceof second language acquisition the experimental subject to observe. By videofrequency, diary on learning process and observation records, the author made aseries of analysis and dynamic description on the point. The subject Youyou hasbecome a bilingual in Japanese and Chinese as he has been living in a bilingualfamily since he was born. Hereby, the investigation on SLA process has beenlaunched in two angles: the diachronic perspective which represents the differentstages of SLA and the synchronic perspective which represents the research onacquisition of language elements and language errors. The thesis aims to depict the actual situation of children growing up inbilingual family of Japanese and Chinese by observations and study on SLA ofYouyou. Besides, it expects to provide some advices on TCSLT(Teaching Chineseas Second Language) teaching for Chinese teachers as resources. The thesisconsists of four parts:The first chapter is introduction which outlines the key problem to study andits meaning;besides, it presents the basic facts on research subject and ontologytheory related. Finally, it raises the research project involving contents, approachesand scope of study. The second chapter gives a overview on trends of research, for example, bilingualism, bilingual phenomenon, bilingual acquisition in early childhood, contrastive study on language acquisition between children and adults. Also, itillustrates some terms related like "Critical Period Hypothesis","LanguageAcquisition Device".The third chapter is about the investigation on SLA of Youyou. It summarizesthe subject and approaches of research at first and then makesa simple description on language contexts in which Youyou lives in with his familymembers and people around. The most important things is marked by investigation on different stages of Youyou in both mother tongue acquisition and secondlanguage acquisition. Exploration on language elements and language errors comesin the fourth part of this chapter. Conclusion is the last part generalizing the nurturing of Youyou as a bilingualunder the bilingual context and how he grasps the mother tongue-Japanese andsecond language-Chinese. At last, it sums up some rules, characteristics oflanguage acquisition, properties of language acquisition in bilingual context anddifference in language acquisition process by contrastive study and so on. Inaddition, it points out the deficiency and boundedness in research and direction offuture research. The author expects to reveal the significance of acquired languageenvironment for development in linguistic capacity of children and proceed todisclose the acquisition of children linguistic capacity, meanwhile, providing factsto go by and serving as a case study on language acquisition of bilingual childrenas supplementary and a simple instance for teaching Chinese as second language.
