Economic and social development is inseparable from engineering and technical personnel. The quality of engineering and technical personnel directly determines the competitiveness of a country. All countries of the world, especially the developed ones, are positive making a reform to the higher education of engineering in order to produce better graduates, which can keep their advantageous position in the international competition. From1980s, under the background of "Returning to Engineering", the engineering education of America has implemented a series of reformation in engineering education. CDIO model is comparatively advanced achievement of engineering education reform.CDIO denotes Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate. It’s a kind of education ideals which combines abstract education and practical education. Its main basic theory is rooted in "Learning by Doing" ideology of John Dewey. CDIO model has commendable framework and ideals, which to make the students be able to actively, practice, organic connection between courses to study engineering.The paper begins with the selected topic background, discusses the current research status of CDIO in our nation and abroad. After the introduction CDIO, the paper studies the ideals of CDIO deeply, and analysis of practice effect of CDIO ideals with three typical cases. The paper proposes a new training model of engineers--"1+2+3" Innovation Talents Training Model, and gave some suggestions to the "Excellent Engineer Training Program", which is carrying out by the Ministry of Education. At last, the author looks ahead of the development of CDIO in China.
