With the advent of the era of knowledge economy, the continuous deepening of the process of globalization, the rapid technology progress and innovation, and the increasing attention to sustainable development, engineers are faced with increasing complex social environment, and engineering is also expending its outreach. But engineers who cultivated under scientific paradigm have difficulty in dealing with complex engineering practice environment, and the development of economy requires engineering talents who have broad knowledge, superb technology, good teamwork and system build capacity. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to learn from the successful exploration of engineering education in such context, that’s the CDIO model, to identify the problems and gaps in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation of our country exist in undergraduate education, and then to restructure the curriculum system model to make up for the gaps. The study firstly analyzed the social environment of current higher engineering education, CDIO as a typical representative to a new paradigm of engineering education, the application of CDIO in our country and the current status of our mechanical engineering education development by reading the literature, and reviewed the relevant theory bases studied by scholars at home and abroad. Based on these the study proposed reaserch questions.Secondly, using the method of cases study, the study analyzed the undergraduate curriculum under CDIO mode of MIT aerospace engineering. The results show that integrated curriculum design under CDIO put more emphasis on the practical nature of engineering, the integration of engineering practice and theory, and the cultivation of a solid scientific foundation, personality development and humanities of students.Thirdly, using the method of empirical analysis and comparative analysis, the study selected44undergraduate curriculum plans of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation from different colleges and universities. Compared with the foreign curriculum design under the concept of CDIO, the study confirmed that many problems exist in our mechanical engineering education, such as "too much emphasis on theory and less on practice","too much emphasis on technical and less on scientific basis","neglecting the teaching of humanities and social sciences, overlooking the cultivation of students’personality".Finally, based on the analysis of the gaps about undergraduate curriculum design between our Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation and the MIT aerospace engineering, taking reference to the principles of CDIO integration curriculum design, the study restructure the undergraduate curriculum system of our Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, and proposed the integrated curriculum system model. To facilitating the implementation of the reform of our mechanical engineering education curriculum system, some recommendations are also provided.
