Hunan Splendid

As one of the four best embroidery of China, embroidery from Hunan province is a boutique embroidery with great culture of Hunan specific. As an important immateriality culture heritage, it has precious value on history, art, culture and economy. From end of period Qing to the middle of the20th century, it has been chosen by many people both from domestic and overseas because of its high level consummate craft, thus it ranks on the top of the embroideries. But on modern times, due to the war in China and industry invading from capitalism outside, embroidery from Hunan is also impacted like other traditional crafts of China, especially as the well-known politic reasons, embroidery from Hunan used to be in great danger. Now, embroidery from Jiangsu, Guangdong and Sichuan has raised one by one, has brought a great impact to embroidery from Hunan. Why can’t the splendor of embroidery from Hunan return? In a word, it’s the mismatchbetween the quality and design of embroidery from Hunan and requirements of market, that lead to the decline of its competitiveness.There are totally3sectors (not including the instruction). The instruction mainly defines the researchscope for this paper, explicitly describe the embroidery from Hunan both traditionally and currently; andthe difference between the embroidery from Hunan and other popular embroidery locally, and finally makea summarize for the paper. The text parts is the core, and mainly research the history of embroidery fromHunan and art lineage, through the research around Changsha area and talking with people in charge ofembroidery from Hunan.I think that today’s Hunan embroidery faces the survival and Renaissance problem, and othertraditional handicrafts have the same issues as well. Base on having a comprehensive and systematic studyon Hunan embroidery’s past and present, I give some constructive comments and suggestions, in order toprovide a useful historical reference for the development of other traditional crafts.
