This thesis is based on image ontology of documentary film to analyzeand discourse the thematic characteristics and cinematograph style of Frenchdirector Raymond Depardon.Prior to other part, Introduction briefly discourse the research purpose andmethodology of thesis.The first chapter focuses on the path of creating of Raymond Depardon,first is his personal experience, then French documentary film developmenthistory, last is the path of development for Depardon films. The second chapteranalyzes Depardon’s selection and positioning of movie theme. The thirdchapter focuses on analysis of the frame style, how the director accomplish his" listening " process by means of frame composition, angle, framing, toexpress emotions and perspectives into the frame. Through his lens audiencecould understand director’s intent and resonate with him.In the conclusion, writer summarizes the features embodied in theDepardon film. Writer pointed out that with respect and understanding toobserve and listen is his creating attitude, focusing on frame instead oflanguage is his artistic style. Writer also pointed out that in Depardon film,there is not only strong social reflection function, but also contains a doublemeaning to consider the human nature and state of human existence.
