The Xinhua Dictionary (version 10) Compiling Series.the Standardization Issues

Xinhua Chinese Character Dictionary (hereinafter referred to as the Xin) is the first small-sized Modern Chinese dictionary. It is also one of the most authoritative and influential dictionary in China. Since Xin was first published, it is the model of dictionary compilation and characters standardization all along. But nothing in the world is flawless and perfect. Although Xin has been revised for ten times, there are still some places that are not good enough. Some of these flaws are because of the limited space of the small-sized dictionary. Some of them are the mishaps of the edition. The author compared the10th Edition of Xin with the current11th Edition of Xin and some other dictionary that is widely approved by the society, such as Zhonghua Chinese Character Dictionary (hereinafter referred to as the Zhong), the Dictionary of Modern Chinese (hereinafter referred to as the Xianhan), the Character Dictionary of Modern Chinese (hereinafter referred to as the Handa). During the comparison, the author found the flaws about the style, the, the exemplification of the10th Edition of XIN. We elaborate the flaws and its influence on the standardization of the dictionary edition.The paper includes six parts. It discuss the flaws of the10th Edition of XIN from the following aspects:the style, the paraphrase and the exemplification. About the style, the author elaborates the non-standard problems on the explanatory notices and the symbol use. About the paraphrase, the author discusses the disadvantages on the accuracy, the completeness, the simplicity and the standardization of the form of the paraphrase. About the exemplification, the author elaborates the flaws on the accuracy, the completeness and the sequence standardization of the exemplification. At the end of each part, the author gives some improvement suggestions of the flaws, which are aimed to provide some references to the dictionary editors.
