Object:To investigate the prevalence of PCOS among adolescent in 5000 Changsha city and study the potential pathogenesis of it.Methods:5000 female in Changsha city were investigated randomly by ques-tionnaire interviewing.Schoolchilren with oligomenorrhea were examined inc-luding sex hormone and B ultra-sound test to make a final diagnosis.The pre-alence of PCOS was calculated by statistical means and the possible etiology was also analysed.Results:The percentage of PCOS among Changsha 5000 schoolchildren is 1.78%.91.99%of the schoolchildren got regular menstrual cycles in the first two post-menarchal years.There was no marked significance in the age of menarche between the two groups. The levels of FT、LH and LH/FSH in the PCOS students were significantly higher than the control(P<0.01).The ratios of LH/FSH and FT(fasting plasma glucose) in the PCOS were2.56±0.66and 1.38±0.67 respectively, significantly higher than the control(0.83±0.15and 0.50±0.22,p< 0.01).Compared with the control,BMI,WHR and body weight of the patients were significantly high(p<0.01).18/88(20.45%)of the PCOS patients suffered from hirsutism compared with the control (2.78%). In the PCOS group 6/88 (6.82%) had mather history.Conclusions:The percentage of PCOS among Changsha schoolchildren is 1.7 8%.Menstrual irregularities two years after menarche should be regarded as e-arly clinical signs of PCOS and need further investigation. The development of adolescent PCOS is affected by many factors such as heredity, the habits of diets and exercises,eas well as psychological stress.
