Objective:To investigate the prevalence of PCOS among adolescent schoolchildren in Soochow city and study the potential pathogenesis of it.Methods:2200 female students in Soochow city were investigated randomly by questionnaire interviewing. Schoolchilren with oligomenorrhea were examined including sex hormone, fasting glucose ,insuline and B ultra-sound test to make a final diagnosis. The prevalence of PCOS was calculated by statistical means and the possible etiology was also analysed. Results:The percentage of PCOS among Soochow schoolchildren is 1.3%. 93.41% of the schoolchildren got regular menstrual cycles in the first two post-menarchal years. There was no marked significance in the age of menarche between the two groups(13.19±1.00 y vs 13.11±1.04y). The levels of FT,LH and INS in the PCOS students were significantly higher than the control(P<0.05).The ratios of LH/FSH and FPG( fasting plasma glucose)/INS in the PCOS were 2.84±2.29 and 0.47±0.21 respectively, significantly higher than the control(0.85±0.12 and 0.68±0.21 ,p<0.05) . Compared with the control ,BMI,WHR and body weight of the patients were significantly high(p<0.05) . The mean birth weight of the patients (3.14±0.50kg) was lower than that of the control (3.34±0.58kg)although there was no statistical difference.7/36(19.16%) of the PCOS patients suffered from hirsutism compared with the control (2.78%). In the PCOS group 11/36 (36.67%) had family history. Conclusions:The percentage of PCOS among Soochow schoolchildren is 1.3%. Menstrual irregularities two years after menarche should be regarded as early clinical signs of PCOS and need further investigation. The development of adolescent PCOS is affected...
