ObjectiveTo observe the effectiveness of BackShu-Points Skin Needle with Cupping treatment of Acne vulgaris. Furthermore, expand the clinical usage by affording objective evidence.MethodThe research includes39cases of Acne vulgaris patients, diagnosed by Western medicine, with self-contrasted in both grading and lesion counting method. Acupuncture points including DaZhui, Fei-Shu(both), Ge-Shu(Both), and Wei-Shu(both) were chosen to be Skin Needled with Cupping. The term of treatment was one time a week, and8times as one period of treatment. Every area and the total number of lesions, including comedone, papule, pustule, nodule, and cyst were recorded with details, from the initial diagnosis with treatment and by the following2nd,4th,6th, and8th treatment. The decreasing rate of lesions and the score changes in each list of the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) were observed as well. Moreover, the patients filled out the Acne Quality of Life (Acne-QoL) Form in the beginning and in the end of treatment. Treatment effectiveness and side effects were statistically analyzed at the end of treatment. A month of clinical follow up was performed for some patients, to discover the duration of effectiveness.Results1EffectivenessAfter treatment, diminution of lesions was significant by gross effective rate of97%and exceptional effective rate of61.76%. Both rates increased as the treatment progressed. No significant relationship between length of disease and treatment effectiveness (P>0.05). No significant relationship between gender and treatment effectiveness (P>0.05). No significant relationship between severity of disease and treatment effectiveness (P>0.05).2Improvements in LesionsAfter treatment, both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions decreased in a very significant number(P<0.01).After treatment, the average GAGS score of lesion types decreased. Except for nodule and cyst, GAGS scores of comedone, papule, and pustule dropped very significantly (P<0.01).GAGS score of papules dropped significantly from the4th treatment (P<0.05). GAGS score of comedones dropped significantly at the8th treatment.(P<0.01)GAGS score of pustules dropped from the6th treatment(P<0.05), but it increased at the8th treatment to some extent. The average score of GAGS decreased after the treatment. Lesion areas including forehead, cheek, and chin, which exclude nose, chest, and back, had a very significant improvement (P<0.01).GAGS score of forehead and chin areas dropped significantly from the6th treatment (P<0.05), and the score of cheek area dropped significantly at the8th treatment (P<0.01).3Comparisons between Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis TypesTraditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis types and the severity of ance lesion were able to be compared (P>0.05).No significant relationship between Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis pattern types and treatment effectiveness (P>0.05).After Treatment, the Wind-Heat Invading Lung (FeiJingFengRe) type of patients dropped very significantly in GAGS scores of comedones and papules (P<0.01); The Humid-Heat Invading Lung and Stomach(FeiWeiShiRe) type of patients dropped very significantly in papule and pustule GAGS scores (P<0.01; P<0.05); Phlegm and Blood Stasis (TanYuHuJie) type of patients dropped significantly in papule GAGS score (P<0.05).After treatment, patients of all three diagnosis types had significant GAGS score drop in chin area (P<0.05).4The Specific Analysis of Acne Quality of Life PatientsThe Acnc-QoL gross score increased after the treatment(P<0.01), especially the advance of Self-Perception and Role-Emotional scores grew significantly. The development of Role-Social score is expressive as well.5Side effect analysisNone occurred fainting during acupuncture treatment, cutaneous anaphylaxis, skin infection or any other serious side effect.Conclusion1. BackShu-Points Skin Needle with Cupping treatment is very effective in Wind-Heat Invading Lung (FeiJingFengRe) type, Humid-Heat Invading Lung and Stomach (FeiWeiShiRe) type, and Phlegm and Blood Stasis (TanYuHuJie) type of Acne vulgaris.2. BackShu-Points Skin Needle with Cupping treatment is very effective in curing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions, decreasing in every list of GAGS score, and improving Qol-Acne.3. In the research, exceptional effective rate of Acne vulgaris patients were not affected by length of disease, gender, or severity of disease.
