There is one old anonymous craftsman in Suzhou has said," The room, the more divisions the bigger, the more demolitions the smaller." It actually means that the change of dimension directs the psychological effect of people. The relationship between spatial scale and people decides the psychological and physiological feelings of the space users, so it is the key factor of successful interior design. Dimension is a social issue that relate to psychology and psychological perception. The relationship between people and space, and how to successfully design space by dimension, meet the people’s basic physiological and psychological needs and be certain commercial space design technique by planning the space dimension in the same time, these are what this essay research for. This essay focus on dimension of atrium in commercial space by research successful cases of commercial space with logical dimensions in literature works at home and abroad, the situation of present architectural area and the demand of the commercial buildings in the future. Taking the relationship between special scale and human perception as the thesis, one atrium in community commercial complex in Beijing as the object of study, dimension as design technique, this design research is expected to benefit the future commercial space design,thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction about the meaning and aim of the research, relative concept, specific research idea and methods to construct the theory system frame. The second part is research basic on theoretics about functional requirement of atrium, development overview and conclusion of existing problems. The third part is research of commercial special scale by analysis of basic feature and formation, layers. The fourth part is my design work basic on the research and conclusion of above and analysis of commercial atriums. The last part is the conclusion and expect of this essay. I expect the theory of relationship between atrium dimension and space could be applied in design work, and create new commercial atrium space by dimension.
