The construction of the new rural is one of the important content of the new rural construction work. However, most of the southern Hunan area currently copy the urban construction blindly. What’s more, it exists many problems, such as lacking of local characteristics, the fracture of the traditional culture. As a result, the southern Hunan area’s construction of the new rural has not designed accord to their actual situation. So the new rural construction in southern Hunan area has no regional characteristics.This article starts from the study of decorative elements for traditional dwelling houses in southern Hunan area. Through the interpretation of it and by using modern architectural technology and materials, we hope to make the classic decorative element of traditional dwellings be used in the construction of the new rural. It aims to promoting the development of traditional dwelling culture and making traditional culture blend with modern architectural culture. It’s research can provide some reference and suggestions for building the new rural which is really suitable for farmers’ demand.The introduction in the first chapter of this article makes a brief explanation of the background and the significance.It introduces the research situation of this subject at home and abroad, determines the study content of this paper and lists the structural context and framework. The second chapter explains the relevant concepts of the new rural construction and the traditional dwelling houses, as well as the relationship between the two. It emphasis on the cultural value and economic value of researching the decoration in traditional dwellings. The third chapter makes a detailed and classified analysis for the traditional dwellings’ decorative element in the southern Hunan, in terms of the performance form, the decorative parts, decoration themes, colors and so on. It makes readers know what kind of classic decorative element of traditional dwellings we should inherit, making it develops and regenerates in the new rural construction. The fourth chapter discusses how we can use the decorative elements of traditional dwellings in southern Hunan to the current new rural construction. It proposes that we should take some design methods, such as direct using, indirect replacement and abstract variation to extract residential decorative elements. It also tells readers the application principle of decorative elements and its part in the new rural construction design. In order to carry out the practice test, the last chapter puts forward some theory viewpoints for the author through the actual project.The author tries to study the decorative elements of traditional dwelling houses in order to make the traditional dwelling culture can still be developed in the rural environment of new period. And then it can improve the current phenomenon of multifarious, flashy rural construction. What’s more, it hopes to make the construction of the new rural can stand in the two pieces of soil "traditional" and "modern", and to provide farmers with a beautiful, comfortable living environment which is full of cultural connotation.
