| With the rapid advance of science and technology and global integration in recent years, the increasingly close of international communication and cultural globalization have been a growing trend in the world. As the vital carriers for spreading science and culture,Scientific and technological information texts play an indispensable role in popularizing scientific and technological knowledge for the public and timely responding to new ideas and developments in science. Therefore, the urgency and significance of translation of such types of texts are of great importance.Based on Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory, this report selects the second chapter of Rare-Earth Metal Recovery For Green Technologies as the source text for translation, aiming to investigate the feasibility of communicative theory for scientific and technical translation projects and how it can guide informational text translation projects. The second chapter mainly discusses the distribution of rare earth ores all over the world and the beneficiation process of typical rare earth ores, which involves a lot of professional terminology expressions, sentences without subject and long and difficult sentences expressing complex relationships. Thus, how to deal with these terms which are obscure and difficult to understand, and how to make the information of the original text accurately and smoothly,to enable the source text to effectively disseminate scientific culture and serve the readers of the target language are the focus and difficulty in the process of this translation report. Therefore,on account of a great number of examples of the source work, the translation strategies and methods of information texts are explored in this report from three levels: the lexical level, syntactic level, and discourse level based on Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory. At the lexical level, not only a glossary of specialized terms is created, but also professional terms and proper nouns are checked repeatedly. In addition, for common vocabulary, necessary lexical conversions should be made according to the contextual background. At the syntactic level, the translator explores the treatment of passive sentences and long and difficult sentences in information texts by combining communication theory and changing the order of sentences when necessary,so as to achieve a more precise, professional and fluent translation that is acceptable to all professions and general readers. At the discourse level, the methods of addition, deletion, cohesion and coherence are used to avoid obscure translations and to make the translation more accurate, smooth and fluent to meet the expression habits of the target readers. This report, based on a large number of examples from the source text, explores the translation strategies and methods of scientific and technological information texts, expecting to contribute to the popularization of science and culture and the realization of the cultural communicative function,as well as to provide references for translators who will be engaged in the information texts in the future. |
