| At the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth century, China has gone through a profound change in turbulence. The transformation of society made Chinese traditional intellectuals have a unique character of "modern times". Tang Wen-zhi is the one who was a typical individual in that atmosphere of the times. The almost-one-century life of Tang Wen-zhi has been not only in accordance with the trace of times’transformation, but also the distinct illumination of it.Tang Wen-zhi (1865-1954), which was also called as Ying Hou, Wei Zhi and later was called as Ru Jing, was born in Taicang, Jiangsu province. He has earned the title of "Jinshi", and has served as the grand Master of the Ministry of Revenue, the assistant minister of The Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry, Acting Chief Executive, and the minister. After having been in mourning for his parent, he took over of the Senior Industrial School in Shanghai, and exerted himself into the career of opening up the first technological university in China, which cost him14years. In the winter of1920, Tang Wen-zhi helped found Wuxi Sinology specialized college, and presided at it for more than30years.This essay is based on Ru Jin’s chronological life written by himself which was published by Wuxi Sinology specialized college in1935, and A chronological life of Tang Wen-zhi published by Soochow university press in1984. We are aiming at researching and studying Tang Wen-zhi’s life explicitly and profoundly, according to the original data, and adding some relevant achievements to share with other researchers. |
