Debussy, the founder of the impressionism, began to show certain style characteristics in his early works. Suite Bergamasque was created in the late19th and early20th century. At the turning point of the century, Debussy initiated his unique style of art with the prospective perspective and exploratory music vocabulary. Suite Bergamasque concentrates various features of his early music, such as the concise trilogy structure, freely transitional tonality and unconventional harmonic utilization. In particular, the application of parallel chord, medieval modes and pentatonic scale forms the rich oriental styles. Suite Bergamasque has exhibited more dazzling light with the interpretation and research by generations of pianists and educators during one hundred years after its creation.Debussy has tested some novel ideas in the Suite Bergamasque and began gradually to break with the traditions in musical structure, mode, tonality and harmonic texture. Although Suite Bergamasque uses the Baroque suites for reference, of which the Prelude, Menuet and Passepied preserve the names of traditional suites, there are substantial changes in the musical image, harmonic utilization, depth of thinking and other aspects. Based on the analysis of the musical structure, tonality composition and harmonic color of every work, the paper brings forth several constructive suggestions in combination with performance key points, including speed, rhythm, tone, touch key, fingering, pedal, breath, artistic conception. Finally, the paper makes the exploration and analysis of the Suite Bergamasque performed by six world-class pianists of different times and different genres, namely Walter Gieseking, Claudio Arrau, Sviatoslav Richter, Alexis Weissenberg, Pascal Roge, Jean-Yve Thibaudet. The paper is in the hope of providing a comprehensive and intuitive reference for the research and performance of Suite Bergamasque.
