C-E Translation Of Texts On2011World Leisure Expo’s Websites:Problems And Solutions

The goal of C-E translation of publicity materials for the2011World Leisure Expo is to build a good image of Hangzhou and China, show abundant Chinese cultural connotations and attract visitors at home and abroad. After finding many translation problems in the texts on2011World Leisure Expo’s websites, the author has tried to discuss and analyze these translation problems in detail.Guided by Skopostheorie, this research analyzes the C-E translation problems on World Leisure Expo’s websites and indicates the main cause of those problems. Due to the large language and culture discrepancy between China and western countries, translators should consider language and cultural features while translating. Through investigation, the author has found many translation problems at pragmatic and cultural levels, such as (1) unreasonable deletion of the original information;(2) pseudo-equivalents;(3) unawareness of inner logic in the original text;(4) inappropriate translation of culture-loaded words;(5) over-foreignized translation of culture-loaded words;(6) translation in Chinese cultural perspective. The author also has selected some typical examples to explain.According to Skopostheorie, the author proposes some solutions, with a set of applicable methods, to deal with C-E translation problems of texts on the websites. They are:(1) adding by selecting important information;(2) replacing by using functional equivalent words;(3) reconstructing by analyzing sentence components;(4) replacing by using cultural equivalent words;(5) noting with hyperlink;(6) paraphrasing with conspicuous words. With these solutions, the translation problems in the texts can be overcome.
