Eileen Chang is a renowned writer and translator in Chinese literary history of the Twentieth Century. Much research has been done about her as a writer, but the research about her translation works is ignored by most of scholars, not to mention the critical attention to her self-translations.This thesis probes into the definition of "Self-Translation", the preconditions for being a self-translator and review of the literature at home and abroad. This thesis analyzes her self-translation work The Golden Cangue on the basis of culture background of her creation.The Golden Cangue translated by Eileen Chang herself. Through examining the selected examples, the thesis makes a careful analysis of the self-translation version, including the way of dealing with the name, appellation terms, color terms and idioms, and the transformation of image and rhetorical devices. In the course of analysis, the issue of foreignization strategy is commented on. It is believed that this kind of analysis provides a new perspective on Eileen Chang’s study.
