Self-translation Studies On The Golden Cangue By Eileen Chang From The Perspective Of Intertextuality

As a new branch of deconstruction,intertextuality has aroused a lot of concerns and discussions.After years of development,the concept of “intertextuality” has become more systematic and theoretical,which is highly significant in many fields including translation studies.Studies on translation from the perspective of intertextuality not only attracts more attention to the intertextual relationships between texts,but also extends the interpretation of intertextuality between texts and readers,as well as texts and cultures.As a special mode of translation,self-translation usually would not meet the problem of the inability to fully comprehend the source text.However,the unique identity of the translator makes the strategies adopted and the role played by the translators thought-provoking in the process of translation.In order to better analyze self-translation from the perspective of intertextuality,this thesis chooses The Golden Cangue written by Eileen Chang as an example.Although there are a large number of studies on Eileen Chang home and abroad,most of them focus on topics such as literariness or subjectivity of translators.Researches and analyses of her works from the angle of intertextuality are still relatively rare.Therefore,this thesis aims to analyze Eileen Chang's self-translated novella The Golden Cangue from the perspective of intertextuality to explore Eileen Chang's selftranslation process,and tries to make discussions in a broader social and historical context.The first chapter is introduction,which mainly introduces background of the research,research methods and aims of the research,and thesis structure.The second chapter is about literature review,which reviews previous researches on selftranslation as well as on Eileen Chang and her translation home and abroad.The third chapter mainly introduces the formation of intertextuality from two aspects of proposing and developing both at home and abroad,which traces back intertextuality overall and provide solid foundation for the following discussion.The fourth chapter analyses self-translation with the theory of intertextuality,and make comparisons on the differences between self-translation and other translations.The fifth chapter is about discussions on some particular cases extracted from The Golden Cangue.The sixth chapter makes a summary.Through discussions made in this paper,the author of this thesis hopes to make further explorations on self-translation and provide better reference for future translation activities.
