| Post-Colonial translation theory is a combination of emerging cultural theories and translation theories and it is also a significant application of the post-colonial theory in translation. This theory, together with other western theories focusing on the "cultural turn", has helped the translation look beyond language and texts. It has thus brought a revolution to the dual structure in the translation theory and created new space for translation studies.Self-Translation or auto-translation is a special phenomenon in translation practice:the writer acts as the translator at the same time on this occasion. Self-translation has a long history in the western world, where writers often shift between different languages in speaking and writing. However, the huge historical, cultural and linguistic gap between Chinese and other western languages has restricted self-translation in China. As a result, studies upon self-translation in China did not start until recent times.Eileen Chang was one of the most successful novelists in contemporary China. The fact that Chang was a long-term translation practitioner and an English writer had been overlooked for a long time in popular studies upon this legendary female writer. Eileen’s renowned novel Jin Suo Ji is a phenomenal piece in Chinese literary and The Golden Cangue, the English version translated by her, was also published in Twentieth-Century Chinese Stories in1971.Eileen had a an unrest and uneasy life drifting from China to colonized Hong Kong, and finally USA, where Chinese culture was held inferior by many. Her drifting life demonstrates China’s cultural changes and echoes the trend of history at that time. Post-Colonial analysis can not only break through the traditional analytical method, but also elicit the clue of the mixed significance of the work completed in that time of cultural transformation. This paper on this self-translated work is also an application of post-colonial theory. |
