This thesis intends to analyze Lawrence’s two representative works, The WhitePeacock and Women in Love to study the artistic effect of color and it also employs thetechnique of comparison to assay the similarities and differences between the colorsadopted in the two novels and to find out their regularity. This thesis is divided into sixparts which include introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction part mentionsLawrence’s literal achievements, a summary, the general review of the two novels and areview which concludes the analysis of Lawrence’s works from the perspective of color.In the first chapter, the reason for Lawrence’s adoption of color is presented, which laysthe foundation for the definition of color and prompts a further study on the social andpersonal reasons causing the formation of the color technique. The second chapterfocuses on the metaphorical and symbolic meaning of Lawrence’s color, especially red,black and white. Chapter three involves the regularity of the color used in Lawrence’sworks. Among the too parts in this chapter, the first one is summarizing and it concernthe similarities and differences between the colors adopted in Lawrence’s two works.Chapter three studies on the reasons which cause these similarities and differences andthese reasons are known as the maturity of Lawrence’s writing technique and the effectof social changes on Lawrence. The study on the reasons for this regularity is the focusof this thesis. The last part includes an aesthetic analysis of Lawrence’s color techniquewhich is achieved through the investigation of the function of color on characterization,plot development and the demonstration of characters’ inner emotion and it summarizesthe artistic effects of color as well. The conclusion part concludes the whole thesis andsummarizes the meaning of this research.This thesis tries to conclude the artistic effect of Lawrence’s adoption of color andto discover the regularity of the color. The mastery of this regularity can help us betterunderstand the deep meaning behind words. This thesis plans to provide a newperspective for the further study of Lawrence and attract more thorough analysis of thecontroversial issue.
