D. H. Lawrence is one of the most talented English novelists in the history of English Literature. In the brief twenty of Lawrence's writing career, he had accomplished more than ten novels and other volumes of short stories which are frequently studied by critics in the 20th century. The White Peacock, as his first novel although attracts few critics attention, it occupies a special literary position in his whole writing career. It is considered as the beacon to his writing, the outset of his literary approach to his philosophical problems. The White Peacock is a story without too much complexity, involving Lawrentian themes as the damage associated with mismatched marriages, and the border country between town and country. In the process of describing the complexity of relationship between man and nature and struggle of modern young man and women confronting ideal and reality, this thesis finds the obvious pairs of opposites in it. Therefore the aim of this thesis is to explore Lawrence's duality concept through analyzing three pairs of opposites and the ambiguities and uncertainties it contains and then to exhibit his primary endeavor of achieving ideal relationships within opposites. It is very significant to study Lawrence's duality concept in The White Peacock. It shows that Lawrence's exploration on dualistic relationship between human and nature, male and female, rationality and sensuality is firmly rooted on his exquisite discovery of human existing condition. And that his endeavor and quest for solving these problems even clearly displays his deep concern for human destiny and human future. This provides us with very useful insights, especially in such critical moment of China's transitional period. From this perspective, Lawrence is a great writer with a sense of responsibility.
