D.H. Lawrence is a gifted writer whose works significantly reflect the essence of the dissimilation of capitalist mechanism civilization and expose those human relationships which are much twisted by the constraints of industrial civilization. He proposes out harmonious and ideal relationships to his own perspective, especially the one between the two sexes. Lawrence wishes to adjust and establish a brand-new relationship between the two sexes, for he believes that the only way to rescue the western civilization and cure the stubborn illness of capitalist society is to establish a simple sexual relationship based on the natural and harmonious sex and union of soul and flesh. This profound theme is fully conveyed and expressed by various vivid characters in Lawrence's fictions.This thesis intends to explore different women's ideas of love in Lawrence's major novels, Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover, so as to illustrate Lawrence's own viewpoints about love and sexual relationships, revealing his time and gender limitation in acknowledging and identifying the tremendous changes in women's love and life.This thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter One introduces Lawrence's literary status, his viewpoints reflected in his treatment of women's ideas of love, as well as some literature reviews. Chapter 2 discusses the social background, Lawrence's love experience and his understanding of women's ideas of love. The following four chapters analyze Sons and Lovers, Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover respectively, exploring different ideas of love of the main female characters in each novel, analyzing Lawrence's attitudes towards these ideas and his own viewpoints of harmonious sexual relationship. The last chapter sums up Lawrence's ideas of sexual relationship and his patriarchy thoughts reflected in the novels. |
