The Translation Of Fictional Proper Nouns From The Perspective Of Domestication And Foreignization

The god dispersed people all over the world to punish them constructing Tower of Babel against the promise. People speak different language, owning different culture, history, religion, geography and custom. However, thanks to the translation, the human society can be united as a whole once more; it acts as a bridge to connect different cultures and customs.The translation concerns about languages issues and at the same time, cultural issues as well. In addition, in this thesis, the most important aspect of translation is about its method, that is foreignization and domestication. Disputes on these two aspects have been existed for many years. At the first time, domestication is in a dominant position. However, foreignization grabs the priority immediately as it appeared in the area of literary translation. The study will focus on the application of these two strategies in the same text, the two translation strategies are not in an opposite but a complementary position.The text chosen as the analysis material is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the simplified Chinese version is translated by Ma Ainong and Ma Aixin. The selection between foreignization and domestication is a frequently concerned topic in the translation. The author will analyze how they choose between these two strategies, to the extent that the whole translated text is clear and coherent.At the first, the thesis surveys theoretical background, purpose and meaning of research, research methodology and so on. Later, the author introduces the arguments concerning foreignization and domestication at home and abroad, including some authorities’preference between these two terms and everything about foreignization and domestication. Then the dissertation discusses the popularity of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, illustrating the reason the author choose it as the material. And then, the dissertation makes a comparative study of the Chinese and English versions to explain how the two translation strategies apply to the translation. Finally, the author makes a conclusion, covering the information about major findings that through this study what we can learn from, about suggestions, about limitations that are caused by time and other factors.
