| Recently, increasing number of scholars focus on interpersonal function on specific texts. For instance, people did study on autobiography, advertisement, politic speech, hotel brochure from the perspective of interpersonal function. Resume, as an essential tool, attracts people’s attention quickly. With international exchange happens frequently, English resume is becoming undoubtedly important and it is almost regarded as a common resume form. The above two reasons are the motivation of this thesis, the author adopts English resume as study objective and interpersonal function in Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar as theory, attempting to analyze how the positive information in English resume is conveyed, to realize the communication purpose. Considering the stylistic features of English resume, the thesis will also study English resume from the perspective of graphology. The study aims at providing suggestions and tips to job seekers and English writing teachers.The author collects about200English resumes on some native websites, and then selects50representative English resumes as study corpus. The author adopts Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar as theory, analyzing the50native English resumes from mood and modality. Because of the stylistic features of English resume, the thesis also analyzes the corpus from space and marking in graphology to know how English resume conveys positive information by non-linguistic means. This thesis adopts qualitative, quantitative and descriptive methods to analyze those50resumes. Chapter One mainly presents the general overview of this study, including the study background, purposes and significance of the study, study methodology and so on. Chapter Two refers to the relevant literature review about this thesis. Chapter Three is the theoretical framework of this thesis. Chapter Four describes the data collection process and analytic methods of the study. Chapter Five is the main body of this thesis and analyze how the positive information is conveyed in English resume based on interpersonal function and graphology. Chapter Six draws a conclusion about the study.The study shows, in mood analysis, declarative mood is adopted most frequently, the job seeker introduces personal information and working experience in declarative sentences; in person system, the job seeker tends to use non-subject sentence, it is because of the stylistic features of English resume, and the language in resume should be precise and concise; in tense analysis, simple present tense and simple past tense are used frequently to describe the job seeker’s personal information and working experience. In modality analysis, nouns, verbs and adjectives with emotional color are frequently used to job seeker’s intention. In graphology, space and marking are used to highlight the positive information in resume, thus realizing the communicative purpose and conveyance of positive information. After the analysis of the three aspects, the author obtains further understanding of the tools with which the positive information is conveyed, it is instructional to job seekers and English writing teachers. |
