During the past decades, the economy of China is developing rapidly and the business communication has entered into a new age, so it is necessary and vital to do further research on this field. Both CP and PP are very important pragmatic theories that also contribute a lot to the successful business communication, especially to the positive information conveyance in English business letters writing. Good use of CP and PP in them can resolve many evitable problems, such as lack of adequate knowledge, field experience, cultural differences and selection of strategies during each stage of business activities. While, present studies mainly focus on the topic from perspectives of either Cooperative Principles or Politeness Principles, there seems little attention or even study from both of them.In this thesis I attempted to make analysis of positive information conveyance in English Business Letters by taking some theories of Grice's Cooperative Principle, Leech's Politeness Principle, Brown & Levinson' Face Theory and other theories proposed by linguists in China, then summarized some characteristics of this special professional discourse and gave some useful suggestions, which should be helpful in business letters. The purpose of this thesis is tried to enable people to communicate with each other successfully and efficiently, to use the language fluently and correctly, to enhance people's competitive ability by analyzing the application of pragmatic rules (CP, PP).However, as a long way of study of positive information conveyance in business letters, there is still much more room to improve.On the whole, the general characteristics of the positive information conveyance in business letters are the followings:(a) The characteristics of a successful English business letters are accurate, concise, complete, sincere and friendly, etc.(b) The language used in positive information conveyance in business letters should obey the politeness principles:be gentle and polite.(c) Generally speaking, people seldom attempt to achieve the purpose by means of violating relevant principles.Furthermore, this thesis is about studies of business writing based on the application of CP and PP, the methods applied in the study are as follows: The first one is the method of case study.This thesis applies the method of case analysis to show how CP and PP influence the expressions of business letters. The second method is to use another method of study, named the method of comparative analysis, to induce the differences between violation of rules and observance of principles.In a word, in this thesis, Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle are used to analysis different kinds of business letters while conveying positive information. Based on these relevant theories, the author gets some conclusion which may help to achieve effective and efficient communication in business letters.(a) Active Tone(b) Focusing on Positive Information in Direct Way(c) Using Simple and Positive Language(d) You-AttitudeThis thesis does not cover all phenomena of PP and CP in positive information conveyance in business letter from every perspective, and the ideas and suggestions, to some degree, are immature. However, the author hopes that it can help us to promote and propel the business communication between China and other countries.
