Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji provides very important materials for the research of Modern Chinese. In this book, a great deal of administrative documents and court verdicts in Song Dynasty were recorded. As for administrative documents, it is well-known that they must be written in printed language. Nevertheless, when it comes to court verdicts, especially the details of cases narrated by the plaintiffs and defendants, the contents of court verdicts show a strong characteristic of colloquialism. In this circumstances, the combination of written language and colloquialism is the most significant feature of the language materials taken down in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji. In this essay, we concentrate on the degree adverbs and demonstrate the general usage of them in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji to reflect the characteristics of degree adverbs in Modern Chinese.In the first part of this essay, we illustrate the subjects, methods, aims and significance of this research. Meanwhile, we also analyze the feature of the language materials recorded in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji.In the second part of this essay, we begin with cataloging the degree verbs in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji. And then, the general usage of these adverbs is discussed. Finally, via describing every single chosen adverb and comparing them between Ancient Chinese and Contemporary Chinese, the meaning and usage of typical degree adverbs in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji are illustrated.In the third part of this essay, the function of combination of degree adverbs in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji is discussed. The function of combination of degree adverbs in Ming Gong Shu Pan Qing Ming Ji have three main aspects. They are semantic orientation, orders in line and the grammatic choice of integrated components. The rules of semantic orientation and orders in line for degree adverbs were very simple. However, the variation of the grammatic choice of integrated components is relatively rather complicated. Thus, the main task of this part is definitely the explanation of grammatic choice of integrated components of degree adverbs.In the last part of this essay, we raise some questions, for instance, which degree adverb could be used to modify the nominals acting as predicate, and also my own opinions about them. These questions should have a further discussion.
