The Multi-Dimensional Analysis Of The Modal Adverb "Chengran"

The research subject of this paper is the modal adverb"chengran". This paper investigates the word "chengran "from aspects of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic in the light of synchronic by using three level theories. The methodology of this paper is the combination of description and interpretation as well as of qualitative and quantitative analysis.This paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction. It introduces the research purpose and significance, research ideas and methods, and previous research status, etc.The second chapter is the semantic analysis of the modal adverb "chengran". First of all, this paper lists the dictionary definitions of the modal adverb "chengran "; then the semantic background of this word is summarized based on the previous research achievements; and next, five types of relationships between the connected semantic elements are identified. Meanwhile, five semantic characteristics of the word are summed up:[+positive],[+subjective],[+complementary],[+euphemistic],[+ascensive]; At last, the semantic direction of the modal adverb "chengran "are analyzed.The third chapter investigates the syntactic function of"chengran". First, it investigates the position of the modal adverb "chengran " in sentences; then it studies the collocating syntax component behind the word; finally the coexistence of this word is studied.The fourth chapter observes the pragmatic function of"chengran "from five aspects—sentence class, the choice of styles, pragmatic functions, textual cohesion, and discourse mark. For the sentence class,"chengran "can be used in statement and exclamatory sentences;in the choice of styles,the modal adverb "chengran" freque-ntly appears in news writing comparatively; as for the pragmatic function, the modal adverb "chengran "functions as expression,evaluation,positive emphasis,and promine-nt focus;in the discourse, the modal adverb "chengran "has the function of cohesion and discourse mark. Finally, it is the conclusion which summarizes and concludes the whole paper, and indicates the deficiency of this paper.
