Verb is the most complicated problem. We can research verb by researching the related components, especially the nominal components. The relationship between the verb and the noun is multiple. The verb and the noun interact and restrict each other. The relationship includes that the quality of the noun which are related to the verb in the sentence, semantic relationship, also includes the quantity of the nominal components and their positions in the sentence. Different verb choose different essential components and dispensable components, so they constitute sentence pattern. Therefore, this method, which is called the analysis of semantic roles, can deeply help us to understand the mapping relationship among the semantic roles and syntactics. We select the verb "wa" as the research object, and make a small corpus about "wa". Directed by the theories of valency grammar and case grammar and based on the actual data, we research the semantic roles of "wa", including how to identify the semantic roles, analyzing sentence syntactic pattern, semantic roles co-occurrence and the restriction, in ancient Chinese, the verb "wa"’s syntactic pattern, then compare these with contemporary Chinese. The essay is divided into six parts. The first part is about the major content and significance of this essay, including the source of the corpus, the methods and research status, and some concerned results about "wa". The second part is that based on the actual data and the former research results, we definite the semantic roles’quality and type. We summarize that the verb "wa" s semantic roles including agentive, recipient, result, instrument, orientation, time, quantity, place, source, and destination and so on. And describe the semantic roles’connotative definition and syntactic characteristic. The third part is that we describe the verb’s sentence according to four different condition:co-occurrence semantic roles when the verb is predicative verb; co-occurrence semantic roles when the predicative verb is "wa C"; co-occurrence semantic roles when the sentence pattern is "Ba" pattern; co-occurrence semantic roles when the sentence pattern is "Bei" pattern. And the verb and semantic role’s syntactic locations and conditions are detailed described. Then we summarize the co-occurrence of the verb. The forth part is that we analyze and describe the verb "wa" in ancient Chinese, induce its semantic roles, and sentence pattern. And make a comparison with contemporary Chinese. The fifth part analyses the semantic roles of "fang" in the syntactic valence aspect. We use the sentence valence to investigate existential sentence and azimuth sentence; the sentence’s influences to the capacity of verb’s valence are discussed. The sixth part is summarizing the essay.
