The Study Of Modern Chinese Modalities Co-occurrence

Using semantics and functional semantic especially the basic concepts andtheories of cognitive linguistics, discusses the modern Chinese semanticssystem expressed by the modal verbs and modal adverbs;Using the prototypecategory theory, depending on the level of typicality of modal verbs, modaladverbs to confirm their scopes and their demarcation,the result including9typical modal verbs,9atypical modal verbs,41typical modal adverbs, and105atypical modal adverbs;On the basis of the theory of cognitive linguistics, thispaper discusses the phenomenon about the co-occurrence of modal verbs,modaladverbs and the co-occurrence between modal verbs and modal adverbs.thediscussion focusing on the continuous co-occurrence of modal verbs betweensame subclass and different subclasses and the discontinuous co-occurrencebetween modal verbs, involving the continuous co-occurrence anddiscontinuous co-occurrence of modal adverbs and the co-occurrence betweenmodal adverbs and modal verbs;Summarized the tendentious rules of all kindsof modalities and attempted to explain the rules and phenomenons outside ofrules.This paper divides into five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,mainly describes studyobject,theoretical basis,research status,research significance and researchcontent of this paper.And also gives an explanation to the researchmethodology and corpus sources.The second chapter uses prototype category theory to confirm thecategorization and numbers of modal verbs and modal adverbs,analysis theirprimary sense and gives a foundation for the following chapter’s discussion.The third chapter is an emphasis of the paper.This chapter reviewscorrelation studies of modal verbs’co-occurrence and analysis a large number ofcorpus,mainly discusses modal verbs’co-occurrence including continuousco-occurrence and discontinuous co-occurrence.Continuous co-occurrence isthe key point of this chapter,involving the continuous co-occurrence of modalverbs between same subclass and different subclasses.Through analysising theco-occurrence phenomenons to get the tendentious rules of modal verbs andusing modal theory,subjectification to explain the rules. The forth chapter is another emphasis of the paper.This chapter choosesthe representative from each subclasses of modal adverbs and investigates theircontinuous co-occurrence and discontinuous co-occurrence phenomenons.Andlooks for the tendentious rules and indicated the reasons for thephenomenon.This chapter also involves the co-occurrence between modalverbs and modal adverbs.The last chapter is a conclusion,gives a summary and induction to thewhole paper and points out the insufficiency of this paper.
