With the frequent communication between China and other countries and rapid development of science, English for Science and Technology (EST), an important tool to promote the exchange between countries, has attracted people’s attention in terms of the great need of its translation. As an important and special English style, EST has its own characteristics in both lexical and syntactic structures, which requires translaters to know the characteristics of EST, to understand the subject matter it addresses and to grasp the translation principles and techniques which should be flexibly applied to translation practice. This thesis discusses my translation of English for Science and Technology (EST), with special reference to the examples selected from "International Standard (IEC61784-2)" which has more than120thousands words. It’s made up of six major parts. The first part describes the background and significance of the study of EST translation, and it also intruduces the study approaches and procedures. The second part introduces EST focusing on its characteristics in terms of vocabulary, sentence structure and commonly used forms, and paving the way for further study of EST in the following parts. The third part presents three-rule principle of EST translation, namely, faithfulness, smoothness and standardization. All these rules serve as the standard by which good translation can be judged. The fourth part deals with some translation errors frequently appeared in EST translation, and the causes behind them. And this discussion is believed to be helpful to EST translation in the future. The fifth part provides some frequently-used translation techniques in EST translation such as literal translation and free translation, repetition and transformation, the good use of which hopefully helps improve the quality of EST translation. And the last part gives a summary of the whole paper, hoping that there will be a brighter future for EST translation.
