With the process of the times, the exchange in science and technology among countries becomes more and more frequent; being an important means of conveying information, EST papers are playing a more and more important role in transferring information of science and technology. The translations of EST papers directly influence the transfer of information and readers’acquisiton of the information. EST papers not only have their own features in words, syntax, and rhetoric, but also own strong specialty. Therefore, there are some translation problems in EST papers that cannot be resolved under the guidance of traditional translation theories, which reguires us to study the EST translation from the perspective of some new translation theories. Skopostheorie is the core of Functionalism, which breaks the limitation of the original, suggesting that to achieve the purpose of translation, the form of the original could be changed and even some unnecessary information could be deleted. Therefore, in translating those papers whose goal is to carry over information, Skopostheorie is better in settling problems in those papers than other theories. Skopostheorie includes three basic rules:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, among which skopos rule is the primary one.Firstly, the thesis introduces the definition, development and three rules of Skopostheorie. Secondly, the thesis chooses cases from12issues of Scientific American in2009, and combined with these cases, this part aims to analyze the main features of EST papers from the aspects of lexicon, syntax and rhetoric; also, the magazine Scientific American is introduced in this part, and the author explains why this magazine is chosen for the thesis. Thirdly, based on three rules of Skopostheorie and combined with the features of EST papers, the author puts forward different translation strategies in different situation, including annotation, bracketing, addition, omission, conversion, division, reversion, literal translation, and liberal translation and so on. Finally, it is concluded that Skopostheorie can be used to guide the translation of EST papers, and in the process of translation, the translator should adopt a proper translation strategy under the guidance of three rules of Skopostheorie.
