Trading is one of the most basic activities of mankind. International trade is abusiness which involves the crossing of national borders. It includes all businesstransactions that involve two or more countries. With ever closer contact betweennations, business interpreting is playing an essential role in international exchanges.Business English interpreting has its own features. It contains a great number ofbackground knowledge, business terms and business etiquette. In order to do a goodjob, the interpreter needs to master both linguistic knowledge and extra-linguisticknowledge. If the interpreter fails to explain clearly what is under discussion, thebusiness negotiation may come to a halt.In order to improve professional skills of interpreters, many scholars have madestudies on interpreting. Daniel Gile tried to help students understand whyinterpretation is so difficult and provide them with some ideas or methods to alleviatethe difficulties. This was what he set out to do in the late1970s in his reflections onthe difficulties of simultaneous interpreting. The first step was the development of aneffort model for simultaneous interpretation. Ever since, Daniel Gile put forward aneffort model of consecutive interpretation. According to this theory, consecutiveinterpretation can be modeled as a process performed in two phases, namely, thelistening and the note-taking phase (the first phase) and the speech production phase(the second phase). In the first phase, interpretation=L+N+M+C(the listening andanalysis effort L, the note-taking effort N, the short-term memory operations M, andthe coordination C). In the second phase, interpretation=Rem+Read+P (rememberingRem, note-reading R, the production P.)This paper discusses how to improve the quality of C-E consecutiveinterpreting in business negotiations based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model ofConsecutive Interpretation. The author mainly talks about ways to improve the C-Einterpreting skills; namely, business knowledge preparation, cross-cultural awareness, note-taking improvement, short-term memory improvement and psychological qualityimprovements. The author believes if the interpreter improves his/her skills on eachphase of the Effort Model, the whole interpretation process will become less stressfulfor the interpreter and the quality of the task is therefore improved.
