This is a translation project report on Magic for Marigold by Lucy MaudMontgomery, of which Chapter9A Lesley Christmas and Chapter10The Bobbingof Marigold is the source text. The heroine of the novel is a naive, lovely andimaginative young girl named Marigold who seems to possess magical power ofbringing people happiness. The book mainly tells readers a series of thrilling andheart-warming stories. Distinctive character of the heroine, natural development ofstories and plain, concise and philosophical language serve as one of the main reasonsto popularize this novel. From the perspective of reception theory of Hans Robert Jauss(1921-), the translator takes into account specific characteristics of children’s literaturetranslation in linguistic styles and sentence structures and adheres to the following threeprinciples: the principle of “readers-first”, smooth and natural translation, and foreignculture transmission. According to specific characteristics of children’s literaturetranslation, the author has adopted several practical translation methods, namely, diction,amplification, omission, division and combination. The author holds the view thatreception theory is of great significance to children’s literature translation practice. Itcontributes to translators’ ability of flexibly choosing and using translation strategies toimprove quality of children’s literature translation and promote children’s literaturetranslation practice so that young readers can get a better understanding of westernculture. It broadens children’s horizons and facilitates cross-cultural communication.
