A Study Of Wun Tonghe’s Poetry

Society of late Qing Dynasty is in the decrepit period of Qing Dynasty.WunTonghe was an imperial person who was influential in political arena during the lateQing Dynasty. In addition to his great political reputation in late Qing Dynasty, he wasalso one of the few statesmans who had great reputation in poetic circles. In the greatsocial upheaval of the late Qing Dynasty, he created lots of poetry, and the number ofthe verifiable poetry was nearly two thousand. This poetry content, involved to the allaspects of the social life in late Qing, and predecessors to its poetry evaluation wasmixed. His preserved poetry was pure and fresh which has reflected the changingsociety and they were the representatives of his poetry works.This paper is on the basis of the previous studies, and mainly puts forwardopinions about Wun Tonghe’s poetry in the four aspects. The first part mainlydiscusses all Wun Tonghe’s life and his origin of thoughts of poetry.Wun Tonghe wasborn in a house of the scholarly family which believed in Confucianism, and his father,Wun Xincun was the teacher of the emper. Because of the influence of the family andeducation, two characters played a key role in the construction of Wun Tonghe’spoetic thoughts. They are his father Wun Xincun, his brother Wun Tongshu.The second part studies the relationship between Wun Tonghe and his friends,disciples, as well as his poetic thoughts. Repeatedly into the royal or imperial court,Wun Tonghe was considerate and kind to men of talent and he liked making diningliterati. So many poets of the literary world had poetry exchanges with WunTonghe.This paper mainly combs poetry activities between Wun Tonghe and hisfriends Pan Zuyin and Zhang Jian who was a famous social industrialists in the lateQing Dynasty. Wun Tonghe had leaved no systematically texts which expounded thethoughts of the poetry. His poetic thoughts existed in the poetry of articles and theprefaces and postscripts of his works. The author was mainly against bitter andprofusion term trend of the poetic style.He advocated natural, simple, pure and fresh poetic style; He advocated that poetry should express a true disposition and expressone’s real feelings; The poetry should have substance in speech and react the socialreality; The poetry should raise gaussian qi and have root end, also the verve.The third part mainly combs subject matter of Wun Tonghe’s poetry. The poetryto sort out the subject matter content of the past has been more system, and this paperis mainly on the basis of predecessors’ achievements, so it just does a little supplement.His poem subjects are divided into five parts: tablet poetry and poetry about drawing,poetry about jilv line service, the landscape poetry and leisurely poetry, elegy, farewellpoetry.The fourth part mainly stags Wun Tonghe’s poetry. In accordance with theirtrack, Wun Tonghe’s poems are divided into three parts: early, middle and late stages.Its early poetry was pure and fresh and vigorous in general, which were full of strength.They revealed young person who was full of ambition between the lines, whichreflected his early state of mind. His mid-term poetry creation occurred in the years ofthe officer’s decades.During those years,Wun Tonghe was busy dealling withgovernment affairs. Although its poetry contents were much broader than early, andthere were some exceptional works which reacted social reality, the overall style wasnot high, which was inferior to his late poetry creation. His late poetry began in1898,the year empress dowager cixi gived Wun Tonghe a lack of home with the sin harmedthe country. This period, Wun Tonghe had suffered great trauma, and his poetrywriting style which were no longer as daring as before also changed greatly, withsorrow and depression, the taste of no return. Most displayed poet’s frustration and thestate of mind of the poet’s insistence after he leaved royal or imperial court. We mainlydiscuss the artistic features of poetry in this paper. Poetry writing of Wun Tonghe haslong been considered as the song poetry tends style. His early poetry learned Du fu,middle-late poetry style was between Du fu, Su shi, and Huang Tingjian. The authorthinks that the poems were characteristic of two main: euphemistic and refined.In this paper the research for Wun Tonghe’s poetry is roughly, so expect scholars’further study.
