Life Events Questionnaire For Graduating College Students And Its Correlation With Subjective Well-being

Life events have a close relationship on the individual’s physical and mental health, and also one of the external factors of subjective well-being. Graduating college students are in a special stage of life, and experience specific life events. Studying these life events and its relationship with happiness has a theoretical and practical meaning. This study investigated graduating college students in Chongqing and Qingdao, and then initially formed the structure of the life events happened in graduating college students lives, through literature review and survey. According to the test and exploratory factor analysis, we determine a reasonable structure to the life events questionnaire for the graduating college students, which contains 18 items. In addition, the reliability and validity of the life events questionnaire for the graduating college students is tested, and the effect on SWB is investigated, too. The results are following:(1) Life events questionnaire for graduating college students can be built multi-dimensional construct, which include six factors:positive background, relationship, graduation, be in love, negative background, changing character. The factor of positive background includes the events about the individual’s own state and the external environment which the he cannot control but feel happy. The factor of relationship contains the status of the individual and his parents and friends on the interpersonal relationships. The factor of graduation includes special events which individual need to complete in his year of graduation. The factor of be in love contains the events experienced by the individual in a relationship. The negative background factor contains the events about the external environment which individual cannot control and feel bother. The factor of changing character contains the events experienced by individuals’ changing from students to workers. Reliability and validity of test results:The internal consistency coefficient is 0.728, and the content validity and construct validity are also acceptable. Life events experienced by college graduates induce positive events which can induce positive emotional experience and negative events which can induce negative emotional experience. The cumulative effect of the positive and negative events is positive in average, indicating that college graduates experienced achievements and applaud except difficulties and setback.(2) The correlation research found that:there is significant correlation between life events and the various components of SWB of college graduates. Life events have a significant positive correlation with life satisfaction and positive emotions, and have a significant negative correlation with negative affect significantly. Not every subscale of the life events questionnaire have significant correlations with the various components of SWB. For example:only the subscale of relationship, changing character and negative background have a significant positive correlation with the life satisfaction. Graduation subscale and changing character subscale and positive emotions have a significant positive correlation. Relationship subscale, graduation subscale, be in love subscale, and negative background subscale and negative emotions have a significant negative correlation.(3) the negative emotions and life satisfaction and positive emotions was significantly negatively related to life satisfaction and positive emotions was significantly positively correlated.(4) Positive emotions as the dependent variable, life satisfaction, negative emotion, graduated from changes in components of the table and switch roles component table regression analysis as independent variables, found that life satisfaction and the role of conversion component table can significantly with the forecast positive emotions; negative emotions as the dependent variable, life satisfaction, positive emotions, interpersonal relations subscale, graduated change subscale, the love subscale and the negative atmosphere subscales as independent variables for regression analysis and found that the graduation change subscales were significant predictors of negative affect.The results of this study provide a reference for graduates in management and raising the level of subjective happiness and recommendations. For the school and society, can give graduates more opportunities for practice so that they gain the confidence of independent living, grow in ability and psychological qualities. For family and friends to maintain a harmonious atmosphere, and graduates of career and major decision to have the attitude of tolerance and understanding, can enhance the happiness of graduates. The happiness of the graduates have a negative impact on the life events main thesis preparation, employment outcomes are not ideal and domestic economic conditions deteriorate. Facing the dual pressures of employment and academic graduates, need to invest a lot of effort in both research and learning and social practice, the upward trend of the social level of consumption or other unforeseen factors impact on families’ financial situation will affect the mood of the graduates, schools and social need to give them more care and assistance.
