Shyness is a kind of negative thought and evaluation to self. Following the negativeemotional experience, people who are easy to be shy have a stronger sense of being small whenthey feel shy, because of their strong negative to themselves and the dependence on the outsideevaluation. They often disguise their behavior and escape from reality. Shyness itself is a kind ofvery painful negative emotions, not only that, it tends to lead to more negative emotions ormoods, or cause some negative behaviors.Western psychologists especially the American psychologists have studied shyness formany years and have obtained quite a few achievements. However ,these results are in westernculture . Shyness can be different in different cultures. To understand Chinese junior middlestudents shyness status and the influence factors, we should study it in our culture.The objects of this study is the 737 students from four middle schools in Jining. Therelationships between shyness, self-esteem, friendship quality and achievement motivation wereinvestigated by questionnaire survey.The results are as follows:1.Overall,junior middle students have medium level of shyness. and the shyness degree isquite different between individualities.There are significant differences in shyness in different grades.The only children are different from the non-only children in the era of restrictions, theperformance of self and the scores of shyness. And they are not different in other dimensions.The boys and the girls are significantly different in the era of restrictions. While in otherdimensions and the scores of the shyness, there are no differences between boys and girls.The shyness and all of its dimensions are different between the students in urban and theones in rural areas.2.The junior students self-esteem, friendship quality are above the average level. Themotivation of being success is bigger than the motivation of avoiding failure.In different grades, self-esteem is quite different, but friendship quality and achievement motivation are not significantly different.The only child and the non-only child are significantly different in self-esteem, and they arenot significantly different in friendship quality and achievement motivation.There are no significant differences between boys and girls in self-esteem, and achievementmotivation. But the friendship is significantly different in sex.Urban and rural junior students’ self-esteem, friendship quality and achievement motivationhas significant differences.3.Shyness and its dimensions have significant negative correlation with self-esteem,friendship quality and shyness.4.Self-esteem plays the intermediary role between friendship quality and shyness.5.Achievement motivation plays the intermediary role between friendship quality andshyness.
