The paper studies three intermediate Chinese newspaper reading textbooks of thenew century from three aspects: representation, notes, exercises. The main researchmethods adopted to deal with the usage of newspapers basic phrases and format arequantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.Representation, notes and exercises are not isolated, but share internal logic. Theyall reflect the writing thought, reprensentation reflect the author’s understanding aboutthe basic phrases and format, and note is the first step in learning these phrases andformat through which learners can understand their meanings and usages. Exercises isa kind of usage and examination of the basic phrases and format.First of all, a brief description and analysis have been made to the representation ofthe basic phrases and format in the three textbooks, mainly from three aspects: thequantity, distribution and the imitation. After inspection, we found that those threetextbooks attach great importance to the study of the newspapers basic phrases andformat, which appear frequently. But the distribution is not very balanced, and weshould also pay attention to increase phrases’ imitation rate.In respect of notes, there are three types of notes modes in the three textbooks:notes, example,notes&example. We analyze it from two angles: paraphrase andexamples. In the three textbooks, most of the annotations are made by target language,and comparatively brief, but accuracy is still insufficient, some of the paraphrases areinaccurate, and the analysis of semantic features and set phrases and collocations arenot very clear. What’s worse, the quantity in examples is not sufficient and there aresome wrong sentences, and syntax errors,which are inconsistent with basic phrasesand format.In respect of exercises, we analyze it mainly from exercise volume and exercisetype. Exercises types in the three textbooks are various and the contraposition is alsovery strong, including some new kinds of types, but we should try to increase theimitation of the low-frequency types and improve its value. The volume of exercises is sufficient, to which our proposal is arrange the distribution of the amount ofexercises reasonably according to each period,each lesson and each book.
