In this paper, the writer has conducted an investigation on exercises of five intermediate Chinese reading textbooks from two aspects—exercises contents and styles, trying to reveal the application of reading skills in the exercises. The investigation made a detailed statistics on each item of exercises content and style firstly, and then did a lateral and longitudinal comparative analysis on them, meanwhile, the writer combined the results with reading skills to analyze and summarize. At last, the writer got a corresponding form of exercises contents, styles and skills; and gained some understanding on reading exercises design.The main conclusions are as follows:1. Textbook writers agree with each other on what the emphasis of the intermediate reading exercises is. Among the four kinds of exercises, vocabulary and paragraph exercises are focal points; it seems that Chinese character and sentence exercises are not as important as the others, but they are still necessary.2. Textbook writers agree with each other on what the common exercises styles of intermediate reading textbooks are. Multiple choice, answer-question and judgement are the most common exercises styles; the writers diverse views on whether blank filling is effective or not. 3. Every non-common exercises style has its aim, which is related to the different textbook's material and their roles need to be verified by the practice.4. Every skill has its corresponding relatively regular exercises style.Through the investigation and analysis, the writer gets some understanding on the reading exercises design that is as follows:1. Intermediate Chinese reading exercises should include Chinese characters and vocabularies practice in higher levels.2. Reading exercises should be designed in many forms which should reflect the characteristics of the reading materials and skills.3. Reading exercises should elaborate the skills and give prominence to the purpose of skills training.4. Reading skills should be divided into some micro-techniques reasonably in order that teachers can organize teaching easily.
