Objective To study four properties and five flavors based prescription compatibility theory and application for damp pathogen based on "When damp pathogen is excessive in the internal, bitter and hot ingredients can be used to treat it as principal ingredients, pungent and tasteless ingredients can be used as adjuvants, bitter ingredients can be used for drying dampness, tasteless ingredients can be used for reduction" originated from Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicine.Methods①To study the theory of "When damp pathogen is excessive in the internal" through literature research.②To study the prescription compatibility rule of "When damp pathogen is excessive in the internal" by using the other nine rules about damp pathogen in Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicine as contrasts.③To study the prescription compatibility rule of "When damp pathogen is excessive in the internal" by comparing with the compatibility rules of related representative prescriptions used in clinical practice. Results We found that not all of the selected representative prescriptions for damp pathogen fit into the "When damp pathogen is excessive in the internal" rule completely. However, all of them fit nicely when all of the ten rules for damp pathogen from Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicine are considered as a whole. Conclusion Through our study, all of the compatibility rules for selected prescriptions for damp pathogen fall within the realm of the ten rules for damp pathogen from Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicine. Therefore, the ten rules should be treated as a whole for further study and attention to draw useful conclusions to use in teaching and guiding clinical practice.
