Objective:Osteoporosis (OP) is a common chronic disease with high incidence, high disabling rate, high mortality and high cost, which causes serious harm to the patients, their family and the society. However, people don’t have sufficient awareness of it and don’t attach importance to it. In recent years, many research data in the worldwide demonstrated that this disease was prevalent in community residents but weak measures had been taken to prevent and treat it. This study conducted epidemiological survey and clinical diagnosing to obtain the prevalence of OP in the Changfeng community residents with various characteristics, identify the high risk population for OP, to implement a comprehensive intervention including health education and ultrasound impulsive electrical treatment to part of the diagnosed OP patients, to evaluate the patients’awareness of OP, behavior change and intervention effect by comparing the measurements before and after the intervention, and to propose strategies and recommendations to prevent and manage OP in community.Methods:3524residents above50years of age were randomly sampled in Changfeng community. The distribution characteristics and the prevalence of the OP patients were obtained by an epidemiological survey questionnaire. Then we used heel bone material density ultrasound detector and lumbar vertebra x-ray to screen out the OP high risk individuals which were further examined by dual energy x-ray to confirm the diagnosis.80-105of the confirmed OP patients were treated with a comprehensive intervention including health education and ultrasound impulsive electrical treatment to change their unfavorable life styles, relieve the bone pain and improve the bone health. Based on the study results we proposed the strategies and recommendations to optimize the mode of OP prevention and management in community. The database was set up by SPSS10.0. The questionnaire scores were presented as quantitative data in the form of x±s and t-test was performed.Results:3524individuals above or equal to50years of age in Changfeng community were surveyed.3367valid questionnaires were obtained. The gender ratio of male to female was1:2.1. The average age was61.3±10.2years. The OP prevalence was28.78%. The overall level of the residents’OP KAP (knowledge, attitudes and practices)was low:76.72%had heard of the word of OP,60.11%had a correct judgment of the bone health status of himself or herself,42.26%known the risk factors of OP,37.75%understood the diagnostic methods for OP. The OP KAP levels were different in the subgroups of the residents. Among the questions on knowledge the diagnostic methods got a lowest awareness.2281individuals attended a follow-up survey, the OP KAP level was increased and the difference was significant.1439individuals’feedback on the program of OP prevention and management,99.86%thought it necessary,96.92%expressed satisfaction,98.54%were to take actions to improve the bone health. The residents’awareness on the knowledge of prevention and management of OP was increased through the health education to105OP patients, and the bone health related life styles of the interfered patients were greatly improved. The quality of life of women aged80-105years old and above who received impulsive electromagnetic field intervention were significantly improved (P<0.05).Conclusion:Lack of awareness on self bone health condition and lack of knowledge about OP prevention and management were two important factors for the prevalence of OP in current society. The factors could be changed by targeted health education, the interfered population in community could increase their awareness on the knowledge of OP prevention and management and establish the life styles favorable to the bone health through health education targeted on OP prevention and management, and the impulsive electromagnetic field intervention was a safe, effective and feasible approach to improve the quality of life of elderly women with OP in community.
