Objective: To study the children tracheal diameter measured bymulti-slice spiral CT three-dimensional post-processing techniques, inorder to obtain children trachea anatomical diameter value from tracheaimaging, and analyze how the tracheal diameter developed withchildren’s age growth, which could accumulate relevant information forchildren trachea study, and provide reference data. Hoping the studycould provide guidance for clinicians choosing appropriate equipmentmodels when they operate tracheal intubation, bronchoscopy and othertracheobronchial intervention treatment. In addition to explore the valuesof chest X-Ray and MSCT in measuring the tracheal diameter ofchildren.Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study usingexisting data from PACS, which is about the children of Changchun area, who had undergone thoracic CT examination. From May2010toDecember2012there were3124children, aging from0to12years old. They were divided into eight groups according to age, the group is0to3months;4~6months;7~9months;10~12months;1~3years old;4~6years old;7~9years old;10to12years of age. The instrument isSOMOTAM Emotion16.. We measured the relevant data of the tracheafrom multi-slice spiral CT three-dimensional reconstruction image. Theresult would be recorded, which include the length of trachea, sagittaldiameter, transverse diameter and the thickness of tracheal wall. Weconducted a control study in the sagittal diameter and transverse diameter of neonatal tracheal with the data measured from neonatal cadavers. Inaddition, we selected120cases who had received both chest X-ray andCT scanning and measured their tracheal diameter from the two kinds ofexamination image, then conducted a control study. All of the date wasanalyzed by statistically. Results: The result of the survey shows that, in each age group thelength of thoracic tracheal, transverse diameter, sagittal diameter and thetracheal wall thickness are as follows:0~3months was (28.9±4.9) mm,(5.9±0.5) mm,(5.2±0.7) mm,(1.5±0.2)mm;4~6months was (29.7±4.9), mm (6.5±0.6) mm,(5.6±0.7) mm,(1.6±0.2)mm;7~9months was(30.6±4.8) mm,(6.7±0.6) mm,(6±0.8) mm,(1.7±0.2)mm;10~12months was (31±4.9) mm,(7±0.7) mm,(6.2±0.9) mm,(1.8±0.2)mm;at the age of1~3was (32.5±5.1) mm,(8.1±0.9) mm,(7.3±1.0)mm,(2.0±0.2)mm;4~6years old was (36.6±6.8) mm,(9.1±0.9) mm,(8.5±1.3) mm,(2.0±0.2)mm;7~9years old was (43.1±8.9) mm,(10.5±1) mm,(10.3±1.4) mm,(2.1±0.2)mm;10~12years old was (51.2±10.4)mm,(11.8±1.2) mm,(12.3±1.8) mm,(2.4±0.3)mm, but there is widevariability. According to the different result of each group, the relevantdata of the trachea will increase with the age growth. The length ofthoracic tracheal in male children is longer than female’s. However, thetransverse diameter and sagittal diameter are smaller than female children. Both of their tracheal wall thickness was approximately equal. The surveyalso shows that transverse diameter is bigger than sagittal diameter inboth male and female children. In the study about neonatal, the resultshows that the transverse diameter and sagittal diameter measured byMSCT are greater than that is measured form neonatal cadavers. There isno significant difference between the X-ray and MSCT in measuring thelength of thoracic tracheal, but in X-ray the transverse diameter is shorter that the result measured by MSCT.Conclusion:1.MSCT and its3D post-processing techniques canclearly show the trachea anatomical structures and the image is easy tounderstand. The measurement method is simple and non-invasive andsuitable for the study of large sample size. It is an effective method tostudy the relevant data of the trachea.2. The neonatal tracheal diametermeasured by MSCT is greater than the data measured form neonatalcadavers, but MSCT can better reflect the real value of the Children’s thetracheal anatomy diameter.3. There are certain clinical significance instudy the tracheal anatomic of children by MSCT.
