BACKGROUNDCataract is a common and frequently-occurring disease,25%population in the world is suffering from cataract, the prevalence of people older than60-year old is up to69.03%. Cataract is the most common cause of blindness and visual disability. Approximately40%blind in the world is because of cataract and most of those are in the developing countries. There are at least4,000,000blind cases caused by cataract in China so far, and growing with an annual growth rate of400,000cases.Visual damage caused by cataract affects patients’daily life, work and mental health, declines the quality of life.Therefore in the clinic practice, it is of great importance for us to study the mental status and influencing factors on patients with cataract, to explore the related negative factors affecting the patients. Thence we should conduct assessment and intervention of health education on patients, in addition good social support. It is feasible for us to enable patients to actively cooperate with treatment, to enhance the independent cooperate ability and to promote the postoperative rehabilitation. So that we can improve the mental health of cataract patients, enhance their quality of life.OBJECTIVESIn order to provide psychological care and health education to help patients improve their quality of life, this study is to understand the status and related factors of anxiety and depression in cataract outpatients.METHODS529cataract outpatients were interviewed from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University by using SAS and SDS questionnaires, t-test and F test were used to describe the status of depression and anxiety among cataract outpatients.MAIN RESULTS1) The status of anxiety and depression in cataract outpatients:62cases (11.72%) showed varying degrees of anxiety.49cases (9.23%) showed varying degrees of depression.2) Results of single factor analysis:age, occupation and income were the influencing factors of anxiety and depression status. Besides, marriage and disease duration are the significant influencing factors of depression status, while not influencing factors of anxiety. Neither anxiety nor depression status showed significant difference among patients across income.3) Results of multiple factor analysis:sex, age, occupation, family monthly income, complication, visual acuity, self rated health level and education obviously affect patients’ preoperative anxiety status. Anxiety score reduced correspondingly with the increase of family monthly income, education, health and vision acuity. Complication, acuity, medical billing and self rated health level have statistically significant difference on depression Scale gross score. Depression score reduced correspondingly with the increase of self rated health level and vision acuity.4) Results of correlation analysis:The results of correlation analysis showed statistical significance in the correlation of anxiety and depression status in preoperative cataract patients.CONCLUSIONS1) Cataract patients showed different degree of anxiety and depression.2) It is of great importance for us to supply effective treatment, psychological care and intervention for cataract patients, to reduce their interpersonal sensitivity, depression and anxiety to the minimum. Therefore, cataract patients will actively seek community support, visual improvement treatment to improve their quality of life. At the same time, it is of great importance to supply the "people-oriented" personalized health intervention and good social support to patients.
