Objective:The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical effects of xitongxiao iontophoresis combined with hyaluronic acid as treatment for mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis, to explore the mechanism of xitongxiao in KOA (knee osteoarthritis) and providing an effective way to treat early knee osteoarthritis. Methods:There was an "random number chart" provided to the66patients which matched the selection criteria and randomly divided into Experimental group and Control group. Each group has given33cases. The Experimental one was treated with xitongxiao iontophoresis combined with hyaluronic acid. These cases were treated with sodium hyaluronate injection in the first day and the following3days with xitongxiao iontophoresis once a day which lasts for5weeks. The Control group were treated with sodium hyaluronate injection only once a week, which also lasts for5weeks. The two groups were observed the pretreatment and treatment after five weeks, and recorded the levels of three cytokines (IL-1, IL-6and TNF-a) of Synovial fluids at the WOMAC index, and get the statistic and analysis to evaluate the clinical efficacy of xitongxiao iontophoresis combined with hyaluronic acid in the treatment of mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis. Results:There were significant differences (P<0.01) in both group at the WOMAC index including pain score, joint stiffness score, function of the knee joint score, and three cytokines levels (IL-1、IL-6、TNF-a). Both groups at before and after treatment could improve the clinical symptoms and lower three cytokines level of Synovid fluids of the KOA patients, but there was a significant (P<0.01) difference at the WOMAC index and with the total efficiency ratio between the two groups after treatment, which indicated that the Experiment group has a better effect than the Control group after treatment compared. There was statistical significance (pain score as P<0.01, function score as P<0.05), which means that Experimental treatment has a better effects at reducing pain and improving the knee’s function. No significant differences found at joint stiffness score, between two groups. There was also no significant differences at the two groups after treatment in reducing inflammatory cytokine (P>0.05),which indicated they have the similar ability to reduce the level of inflammatory cytokine. Conclusions:The treatment of xitongxiao iontophoresis combined with sodium hyaluronate injection to mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis is good at releasing the patients knee pain and improving joint functional capacity with side effects as "advantage of simple small treatment"...
