ObjectiveThe present study aims to understand the knowledge and attitude of community residents living on Furong district of Changsha city, in order to provide the basis for the alteration of education mode.MethodWe conducted a drop-in questionnaire interview with417general residents using the random sampling method in Tang Ren-Bridge community that represented the community concentrated with drug users (subjects with drug users were excluded). The survey included general demographic characteristics, the way of getting the knowledge of heroin addicts, whether there were people addict heroin around, the reason of addiction, the reason of having difficulty to withdrawal, awareness of the heroin addicts, attitude to heroin addicts, and include four cases in order to understand the impression and social distance of the ordinary residents to the heroin addicts. Epidata3.1and SPSS17.0were used for data recording and analysis.Results1. The awareness rate of heroin-related knowledge in general residents was76.0%. Cultural degree difference had connection to the awareness levels of heroin(p<0.05), junior college and higher education groups know best, primary school education groups know the least.2. Television and radio is the main way to get heroin-related knowledge for each crowd, accounting for68.4%of those surveyed, followed by hearing from family and friends, newspapers, books and network..3. The influence of friends and bad personality are the most important influencing factors to addict heroin, accounting for65.7%and58.0%, respectively. The lack of will is the most important reason for withdrawal difficulty of heroin, accounting for81.8%, followed by the body needs, accounting for34.5%.4. Ordinary residents have negative cognitive and negative attitude to heroin addicts in general.60.2%of the people think they are moral bad people,68.8%think they are a drag on the society,59.2%think they can control their behavior, they are themselves to blame,84.4%think that they will have violence, and they are threat to the safety of others,56.8%would be afraid to talk to them,71.9%think that they will feel uneasy working with them,73.7%will be impatient to stay in a room with them,78.2%think that they will feel shame if their family were diagnosed as heroin addicts. However, only21.8%are willing to maintain friendship with them, only5.3%would consider marriage with them, only6.4%allow their children to marry them. But residents did not fully give up heroin addicts,61.2%think that they are patients,60.0%think they can be treated in the community,73.1%think they can work normally after recovery.5. Women than men showed more positive attitude to heroin addicts in some viewpoint, older age groups demonstrated better cognitive and attitude than younger ones, high education levels showed more positive attitude than the lower ones.6. Ordinary people hold a recognized attitude towards heroin addicts, but they still tend to maintain social distance with them.ConclusionThis study documented the residents’ attitude toward heroin addicts. Different community residents have certain heroin addiction-related knowledge, and the level of knowledge and access to it is different. Most of the residents have negative attitude. Publicity and education work in the lower age levels and educational levels should be strengthened, we also should strengthen the elimination work of discrimination against heroin addicts, encourage residents to increase the care of drug addicts. Strengthen radio, television, newspapers, networks, and other mainstream media, and take different forms of publicity for different groups of people.
