Objective:The purpose of this study is to investivigate the health education competence of practice nursing students in Hangzhou. Compare the difference between China and the United States in cultivating nursing students’competence of health education. Understand the problems of cultivating the nursing students’health education competence in nursing school and practice hospital. Give suggestions to improve the current level of nursing students’ health education competence.Methods:Using a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research methods.1100practice nursing students from10hospitals in Hangzhou were recruited to the questionnaire investigation. Purposive sampling method were used to recruit nursing students.10American nursing students and11nursing students internship in Hangzhou participated in Non-structured interview.Result:(1) The total score of nursing students’health education competence is156.73±16.73. The score of Assess health education area is3.94±0.43. The score of plan health education area is3.93±0.47. The score of implement health education area is3.92±0.48.The score of evaluate health education area is3.88±0.51(2) The factors that affect nursing students’health education competence:education background, school performance, health education courses, nursing research courses during the school, involved in health education activities, understanding the importance of the nursing profession and health education teaching, hospital on the training of health education teaching and the role of the clinical teacher.(3) Nursing schools haven not pay enough attention to cultivating nursing students’ health education competence. Nursing students are less involved in health education activities during the internship. The practice hospitals have not provide sufficient network resources.Conclusion:Nursing students’health education competence level is low. The school curriculum should encourage nursing students participate in health education activities; Teaching hospital should provide health education training and strengthen the information network construction; Nursing school and teaching hospital should be closely linked.
