Objective We aimed To identify the developments and research trends via a bibliometric and visualization analysis of the literatures in the field of functional brain MRI at home and abroad.Materials and Methods We performed a bibliometric and visualization analysis for data retrievals regarding in functional brain MRI from2002to2011via WOS(Web of Science) and CBM(China Biology Medicine). The literatures bibliometric analysis were processed by Thomson Data Analyzer and Excel in five aspects: year, countries and regions, research institutions, authors and journals. Keywords cluster analysis was used to analyse the international literatures with CiteSpace Ⅱ, and the hotspots of international research was identified. Meanwhile, keywords of domestic researches were clustered with UCINET.Resu I ts Bibliometric analysis in the field of brain functional MRI overseas were showed:1) Articles in this area from WOS database added up to a total of2297during2002to2011.2) Totally, Fifty-two countries and regions have published research literatures. The amount of articles from United States was1028, while95articles were from China, which, ranked No.7. The top five countries of betweeness centrality were Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Scotland.3)There were1341organizations involved in related research,6institutions of the top10were from the United States.4) Thirty-one authors published articles more than or equal to10.The highest cited author was Friston KJ according to the citation analysis(cited frequency,440), while the author of the highest of centrality was Ogawa S (0.29).5) The articles were distributed in677core publications. The top10publications were all marked with high-impact factor.Bibliometric analysis in the field of brain functional MRI domesticlly showed:1) Articles in this area from CBM database added up to a total of1078during2002to2011.2) Totally, Twenty-nine Provinces (municipalities) published research literatures. The major researches came from Beijing (15.96%), Shanghai (11.04%), Guangdong Province(10.58%).3) Domestic research institutions mainly originated from the University affiliated Hospitals, the top three institutions ranked with the amount of articles were Beijing(33), Tianjin (19),.Nanjing (14),respectively.4) Amount of the first author was869, and3142participate authors altogether.5) Domestic papers published in this field in280journals.The top10journals were core journals ranked by Ministry of Science and Technology of China, which all sorted in medical imaging with a high impact factor and high influence.6) Chinese authors published95articles distributed in58international core publications.Chinese Academy of Sciences (CHINESE of ACAD SCI) delivered the most articles.Subject analysing in the field of brain functional MRI studies at home and abroad indicated:1)International research areas in2002-2006were divided into three categories, which were brain activation, functional resonance imaging and depression. While those in2007-2012were devided into five categories, which were meningioma, brain connectivity, gliomas, disconnection syngrome and atrophy.2)Domestic areas of research themes were distributed in five major categories: magnetic resonance imaging, functional brain imaging, cerebral vascular diseases, tumors and traumatic diseases, non-organic disease and secondary brain injury.Cone I us i ons The papers amount in the field of brain functional MRI appeared a continuous and overall increasing trend in the recent decade. The United States and Europe started early in this research field, and had a higher research level and a larger influence all over the world.China has formed a group of core researchers and research institutions, the amount of articles and the citation frequency are in front rank. There is no significant difference observed between domestic and international research subjects. This research analyzing external and internal information on a particular area of literatures with different statistical algorithms, which can mine the potential informations in the data. This empirical study indicates reviewing and analyzing literatures with appropriate statistical tools could be an effective way to medical researchers.
