Objectives The purpose of this study are:(1) to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy in improving malnutrition status of stable COPD patients with Spleen-lung Deficiency;(2) to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy in improving respiratory function and exercise tolerance of COPD patients with malnutrition;(3) to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy in improving COPD patients’ quality of life;(4) to create the Chinese medicinal dietotherapy mode which meets the nutritional needs of patients with spleen-lung deficiency. Methods Randomized controlled trial was designed. Sixty-seven stable COPD patients,31males and36females, with a median age of70.78±10.41years, who met the inclusive criteria recruited from out-patients of the community health service centre were divided into the intervention group (33) and the control group (34). The control grope keep the original medical and care, using blank control, and the intervention grope was treated by the Chinese medicinal dietotherapy for8weeks. Data were collected at baseline, immediately after intervention. Comparisons were made to examine the effects of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy on nutritional state index (BW, BMI, IBW, MAC, TSF, MAMC, ALB, PA, TRF. TLC), respiratory function and exercise tolerance indexes (FEV1%, FEV,/FVC,6MWD) and the quality of life indexes (TMS, F1S, F3S, F2S. F4S).Results (1) Significant differences were found in every nutritional status index in the intervention group compared from baseline to after8weeks (p<0.05), and Compared with the control group, IBW%, MAC, MAHC, ALB, PA, TRF, TLC increased significantly, the difference has statistical significance (p<0.05);(2) FEV1%and6MWD were increased significantly in the intervention group after intervention8weeks, while there were no significant difference in FEV1%and FEV1/FVC compared to the control group;(3) Significant differences were found in every nutritional status index in the intervention group compared from baseline to after8weeks (p<0.05), TMS, F1S, and F4S increased significantly, the difference has statistical significance compared with the control group(p<0.05).Conclusion (1) The project of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy is a good tool, which is consistent with the essence of Chinese traditional diet, can effectively maintain and improve the malnourished COPD patients’malnutrition status, respiratory function, exercise tolerance and the quality of life;(2) the intervention of Chinese medicinal dietotherapy for COPD patients can meet the nutritional needs, fit for their eating habits, conducive to rehabilitation of the disease, is the embodiment of our traditional diet culture and feasible nutritional intervention mode.
