Objective: The main aims of this study were to examine the status of social anxiety andits influential factors among students of grade7and8and to provide the basicinformation for health education of students of grade7and8and the development ofsocial anxiety intervention program.Methods: Based on stratified, cluster sampling, questionnaire investigation wasconducted among1700students of grade7and8in4junior middle schools and parentsof900children from the two ones of4junior middle schools In Bengbu. Data werecollected by using the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC), Chinese MiddleSchoo1Student’s Mental Health Scale (MSSMHS), psycho-so-Matic-tension-relaxationinventory (PSTRI) and a self-designed item. Univariate and multivariate logisticregression analysis were performed to evaluate the influential factors of the status ofsocial anxiety among students of grade7and8. and then140students with socialanxiety status were selected and140controls were matched according to the same sex,grade, and age (the discrepancy less than0.5year) and similar educational backgroundand occupations of parents to further evaluate the influence of stress of mental andphysical of parents on status of social anxiety among students of grade7and8.Results:(1)2600subjects were recruited into this study, and2450including1620students and830students’ parents completed the questionnaires.(2) there were272social anxiety status students among total1620ones, Theprevalence of social anxiety among students was16.8%. The social anxiety of the grade8chidren was higher than that of grade7children; The social anxiety of the girls washigher than that of boys; The social anxiety in rural areas was higher than that in townsand cities.(3) The following factors were probably affected the The prevalence of social anxietyby Chi-square test: family economical status,educational level of fathers, educationallevel of mothers, level of social support,childrearing style of parents, personality ofchildren, bodily form of children,appearance of children,appraisal from others,timesof adolescent health risk behavior every week, including high-intensity exercise, small intensity exercise, indulged in the internet and played video or computer games.Chi-square analysis showed that with the improvement of Mental Health, there wereless prevalence of social anxiety among students; Rank sum test revealed that the scoresof the psycho-so-Matic-tension-relaxation inventory (PSTRI) were higher inobservation group than that in control group and Chi-square analysis showed theconstituent ratio of higher pressure parents in observation group were higher than that incontrol group.(4) Data from multivariate analysis showed that social anxiety status of students ofgrade7and8were associated with student’s mental health, adolescent health riskbehavior, personality of children, appraisal from others and mother’s educational level.Conclusion:(1) the degrees and frequencies of social anxiety for students of grade7and8were high, The social anxiety of the grade8chidren was higher than that of grade7children; The social anxiety of the girls was higher than that of boys; The socialanxiety in rural areas was higher than that in towns and cities.(2) Many factors were found to be involved in social anxiety, especially regarding thestudent’s mental health, adolescent health risk behavior, personality of children,appraisal from others and mother’s educational level. Special preventive measuresshould be taken to reduce the prevalence of social anxiety among students of grade7and8, schools and parents should pay more attention to and strengthen the mentalhealth education of students of grade7and8.
