ObjectiveBased on the literature research and clinical practice, this study was to observe the clinical effects of acupuncture in treating children with ADHD and explore the therapeutic mechanism of this therapy, which provided the theoretical and clinical basis for acupuncture therapy. At the same time, provide objective indicators for acupuncture treatment of ADHD through the observation of QEEG features.MethodsAll the patients who accepted the treatments in this study were from the Acupuncture Department, Shenzhen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. With the premises of agreements of the patients’parents or other guardians and according to the inclusive and exclusive criteria of western medicine,40children with ADHD were enrolled into two groups. In the treatment group, all the20cases were treated with acupuncture and behavior therapy. In the control group, all the20cases were treated with behavior therapy. We use the Conners Parents questionnaire (PSQ) seal to assess the clinical symptoms of the children before and after the treatments. The difference of the therapeutic effects and the feature for each bang of EEG was analyzed after acupuncture treatment.Results1. There were no significant difference of sex, course, age, QEEG features and PSQ score between the two groups (P>0.05), with comparability before they accepted the treatment.2. The total effective rate in group A was significantly higher than that in group B(P<0.05). For the assessment of PSQ, the scores of hyperactivity index, behavior problems, learning problems, hyperactive impulsive and anxiety factor as well as the clinical symptoms were remarkably improved in group A (P<0.05). In the control group (group B), the scores of hyperactivity index, behavior problems, learning problems in PSQ showed significant improvement after the courses(P<0.05), but the improvement of hyperactive-impulsive, anxiety, mental and physical disorders index was not statistically significant(P>0.05).3. After acupuncture treatment, the percentage of βband power of QEEG increased and the percentage of δ band power of QEEG decreased when they were quiet. When they play the game, the θ/β was statistically decreased (P<0.05).The change of θ band between the children play games and to be quiet was remarkable. It suggests that acupuncture treatment may enhance the brains excitability for the children with ADHD.Conelusions1. Tiaorentongdu acupuncture therapy has definite clinical effects in treating children with ADHD.2. The study results showed that acupuncture treatment can improve the hyperactivity index, behavior problems, learning problems, hyperactive impulsive and anxiety factor of the chi ldren with ADHD, improve their behavior. It is therapeutic effect and worthy of further promotion.3. Acupuncture can change the QEEG feature which suggests that the QEEG power serves as an effective index of acupuncture. Acupuncture can enhance the excitability of brain.
