ObjectiveThese studies aim via ancient literature, providing a supporting basis for theoretical and clinical applications of Hegu Xue-its primary treatment, clinical compatibility, needling and moxibustion techniques.MethodogyBased on the16pieces of prominent ancient writings in acupuncture collected by Huang Long Xiang in his writing <<A Collection of Prominent Ancient Acupuncture Literature>> and through serious selection criteria, we have obtained Hegu Xue’s relevant provisions, thereby establishing a data base. Then, by analyzing and applying statistics twice, in accordance with the the classification of <<henjiu Dacheng>> by Yang Jizhou-toally23categories, namely The Wind Evil Causes; Typhoid Fever; Tan-chuan Cough; All Sorts of Accumulation in the body; Abdominal Diseases; Cardiac Stomach; Mental illness; Cholera; Malaria; Swelling(Jaundice, Red bile); Perspiration; Blockage&Atrophe Syndrome; Intestinal Hemorrhoids Stool; Yin Hernia; Head&Face; Ophthalmology&Otology; Muzzle; Thoracordorsal Flank; Hand,Foot&Waist Axillalry; Gynecology; Pediatrics. A statistical regrouping has been conducted by employing the frequency statisticsl method in relation to Hegu xue’s primary treatment. Lastly, through analytical summation, the diseases mentioned in the ancient literature suitable for acupuncture treatment of Hegu xue are brought forward.FindingsThrough data searching in the ancient literature,we established503Hegu xue related provisions, from which440provisions are suitable for prescription uses,44provisions for single xue treatment,19provisions for integrated treatment,18provisions as regards the methods of needling insertion and moxa cones application.According to the ancient literature, Hegu Xue is widely used in clinical application,163accumulative treatment were recorded, from which153prescriptive treatment,23single xue treatments excluding13repetitive treatment.There are12acupoints commonly connected with Hegu therapy, theyare:Fengchi、Hegu、Sanjian、Zhusanli、Taichong to treat feeble limbs and evil winds; Hegu and Sanyinjiao to treat cough; Hegu、Sanyinjiao to treat deficiency of blood and qi of spleen; Hegu and Fuliu totreat absence of sweating; Cuanzhu、Sizhukong、Dadu、Fengchi、Quchi and Hegu to treat headache; Tinghui、Tinggong、Ermen、Quchi、Hegu to treatdeafness; Jingming、Hegu、Guangming to treat eye diseases; Quchi、Hegu、 Chize、Sanjian to treat shoulder and upper back pain; Hegu、Taicong to treat arm,shoulder and upper spinal column pain; Quchi、Hegu to treat pain in upper extremities; Juque、Hegu、Sanyinjiao to treat stagnation of qi activities during preganancy; taicong、Hegu、Sanyinjiao to induce protracted labor.The common10acupoints that always go with Hegu in pairs are:Hegu、Fuliu; Hegu、Taicong; Hegu. Shuigao; Hegu. Sanyinjiao; Hegu. Baihu; Hegu Fengchi, Hegu. Liequ; Hegu. Houxi; Hegu. Zhusanli;Hegu. quchi.Others, Needle insertion of Hegu xue is normally0.3cun and0.5cun in depth, moxa cones application is3in number.Reinforcing manipulation of Heguxue is commonly used in gynecological diseases while reducing manipulation is for the Head and face diseases. This acupoint should not be applied to pregnant women, the reducing method should be used when it is absolutely necessary.Conclusion1. Hegu xue is widely applied in clinical practice treating163diseases in total.2. There are12regularly used prescriptions,10pairs of commonly applied acupoints for Hegu Xue.3. Needle insertion of Hegu xue is normally0.3cun and0.5cun in depth, moxa cones application is3in number.4. Reinforcing manipulation of Hegu is commonly used in gynecological disease while reducing manipulation in Head and Face diseases.5. Hegu should not be applied to pregnant women, the reducing method should be used when it is absolutely necessary.
